C-GCC Offering Scholarship to Vaccinated Students

College to Host COVID-19 Student Vaccination Clinic Wednesday, August 4
HUDSON, N.Y. – In an effort to increase its number of vaccinated students, Columbia-Greene Community College is sponsoring a Student Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday, August 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering some key incentives as part of the event.
Per New York State guidance, and pending approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the State University of New York (SUNY) will require all in-person students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning to campus this fall.
To this end, any C-GCC student who receives a vaccine at the August 4 clinic will receive a $10 gift card to Stewarts Shops, and be entered in a grand-prize drawing for free tuition for the Fall 2021 semester: the equivalent of nine credits for part-time students or 12 for full-time students.
Students who’ve already been vaccinated may also enter the drawing, by showing proof of their vaccination record to the College’s Director of Health Services.
C-GCC President Carlee R. Drummer, Ph.D., said the clinic is the latest move by the College to ensure the overall health and safety of its students, while at the same time maintaining its commitment to a high-quality education for all.
“The College is proud to partner with Columbia and Greene counties by offering the COVID-19 vaccine to any registered student who seeks one, and looks forward to re-opening its doors to students and the community at-large in the fall,” she said, noting that C-GCC is a Department of Education COVID-19 College Challenge member institution, having pledged to spear-head efforts to vaccinate students through education, leadership, and vaccine-delivery.
“The CoGreene spirit of resolve and cooperation kept us moving forward during these unprecedented times, and ultimately, will keep us moving forward – together.”
SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras echoed Drummer’s sentiment, adding that the system’s revamped COVID-19 policy revives many elements of the traditional college experience that were lost in the last 16 months.
“One year ago, the future of the immersive, on-campus learning experience we love was in grave jeopardy with no resolution in sight,” he said. “Over the last two months, I’ve watched students cross the commencement stage beaming with pride, joy, and optimism. There’s a palpable energy in the air—a real sense of hope and healing. Let’s not go back.”
Vaccines for C-GCC students will be administered in the Professional Academic Center (PAC) at C-GCC on August 4 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

A. O. Fox Auxiliary Awards Joanne Burdick Scholarships to Area Graduates
Oneonta, N.Y. – A. O. Fox Auxiliary has named Morgan Boldt of Smyrna, NY and Megan Scriver of South New Berlin as the recipients of the 2021 Joanne Burdick Scholarships. The $2,000 awards will help them pursue majors in the health care field.
Boldt graduated from Sherburne-Earlville Central School on June 26. She starts her college studies this fall at Le Moyne College in Syracuse with plans to become a physician assistant.
Scriver graduated from Unadilla Valley Central School on June 26. She will be attending Elmira College in the fall where she will begin working towards becoming a registered nurse.
Joanne Burdick Scholarships recipients are chosen each year based on academic achievement, community service, interests and financial need. The A. O. Fox Auxiliary established the scholarship in 1997 to honor Joanne Burdick’s first ten years of service as the director of volunteer services for the hospital. Burdick continued in the position for 17 more years until her retirement in 2014.
“I am always honored and humbled by this annual award in my name,” says Burdick, “but never more than this year. This scholarship has assisted fifty-plus health care professionals over the years. They have gone on to be essential workers and heroes during this pandemic. I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.”
Special Guest Artists Joins Concert at Hyde Hall
On July 23rd, the Musicians of Ma’alwyck return to Hyde Hall for a concert with special guest artists. Jörg-Michael Schwarz, violin, and Katrina Smith, viola, join the Musician of Ma’alwyck’s Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, director and violin, to perform Dvořák‘s Miniatures paired with the trio of George Templeton Strong.
The program draws on the insights of George Templeton Strong who chronicled the musical scene in early America in his diaries. His sons were friends of the Clarke family and spent time at Hyde Hall; a portrait of Louis Strong still hangs in the Drawing Room. In this elegant string trio, Strong's other son, George, a well-respected composer, is coupled with music from Antonin Dvořák and readings from Strong's insightful diaries
The artists are first-rate and promise a memorable performance. Jörg-Michael Schwarz is a prize winner in several international violin competitions, one of North America’s leading Baroque violinists, and co-founder and co-director of the award-winning REBEL-Ensemble for Baroque Music, one of the world's premier early music groups. Katrina Smith is a member of the Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra since 1999, is Co-Principal Violist of the Dallas Opera Orchestra, and Assistant Principal Violist of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and substitutes regularly with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz is director and violinist of Musicians of Ma’alwyck, performs with the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra, teaches as an adjunct professor of violin and viola at Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) and at Union College.
Jonathan Maney, Hyde Hall’s Executive Director points out that “George Templeton Strong was one of America’s most important 19th-century diarists. The fact that his son lived at Hyde Hall for many years makes this concert both fitting and fun.”
“George Templeton Strong, Jr. was a fascinating figure,” says Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz. “His musical works reflect the romanticism of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, full of harmonic color and intensity. We pair his trio with the music of Dvořák, who visited America in the 1890s, and left with an ample impression of America's musical potential. The program will include readings from the Strong diaries about 19th- century America and its culture.”
The Concert begins at 7:30 PM on Hyde Hall’s south lawn. Concertgoers can purchase through HydeHall.org or at Eventbrite. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved to the Milford Community Center.
